Creating WestRaven's
Mini-Nature Reserve

With funding from Cambridge Community Foundation (CCF) Fund For Nature program.
We will develop a ‘mini-nature reserve’, and enhance, maintain and create habitats with improvements to our wildlife pond such as a basking bank, butterfly bank, hibernaculum’s and enrichment planting schemes here such as Hemp Agrimony and Flag Iris. We will add select trees across the site, e.g. Rowan, Silver Birch, Lilac, Ribes, Guelder Rose, Spindle. This will be complimented with underplanting such as woodruff, sweet violet, Ramsons and Winter Aconite.
In partnership with Froglife’s Transforming Lives project their trainees will deliver the pond enhancements via a program of at least 3 public workshops & volunteer training sessions. This will upskill their trainees whilst teaching and upskilling our community and our volunteer team at the same time, further developing employability opportunities.
We will construct 5 Bee Hotels using reclaimed wood and timber. This will be done with members of the public, teaching them about the different types of bees and the plants and habitats where they will be sited.
We will also create signage and educational boards for these features, using natural materials, helping our community to understand, appreciate and enjoy their natural environment, and raise levels of local pride, aspiration and community cohesion as they will be able to access a sustainable wildlife habitat, a “mini nature-reserve” on their doorstep.
